Henry's marriage to Margaret appears in the Shenandoah County, VA marriage records. The record gives her last name as Eleshite and indicates she was the daughter of John.

Henry appears yearly in the personal property tax lists of Shenandoah County from 1828 through 1831, then in Page County, which was formed from Shenandoah County in 1832, from 1832 through 1850.

In a Page County, VA deed (@@1) dated June 1833, Henry W. sold land on the drains of Hawksbill Creek that he had inherited from his mother Sally Stroup, who had inherited the land from her father William Stroup. Henry also appears in a deed of trust Jan. 20, 1847 (@@2) where he put up personal property as collateral on money he owed.

Margaret died intestate and a Page Co., VA probate (@@3) identifies the guardian of her children as Emmanuel Grove. Her children are identified in 5 separate probates (@@4) where they received money Margaret had inherited from her father John C. Aleshire.

The Will of John C. Aleshire (@@5) dated Nov. 19, 1845 and proved May 25, 1847 identifies his daughter as Peggy, dec'd, wife of Henry Mauck, and states that the money inherited by Peggy's children was not to be given to Henry Mauck.

Henry's second marriage to Mary Ann Glenn, is reported in the marriage records of Page Co., VA. In the 1850 census, Henry appears with a child 10 days old. Mary's date of death is estimated assuming this child was hers.

Henry's marriage to Rebecca is estimated based on the death record of his son Daniel, who was born July 1856.

Henry appears in the 1850 census of Page Co., VA. Henry and Rebecca appear in the 1860 and 1870 census of Page Co., VA, which provided her birth info.

Henry's death was reported by Rebecca in Page Co., VA. His cause of death was not given. The death record provided his birth and death info, occupation and his father's name as David. Henry also appears in the family bible of Daniel Koontz, who married Henry's sister Elizabeth. The birth date provided by the bible Dec. 2, 1801, was used instead of the date of birth provided by the death record (Apr 30, 1804) as it was probably a more accurate date.

Henry's death date also appears in the records of the Mill Creek Baptist Church. Henry is listed as a member in these records (@@6).

Rebecca appears in the 1880 census of Page Co., VA in the home of their son George. Her parents are listed as both being born in VA. Rebecca appears in the 1900 census of Page Co., VA, boarding with Frank Rothgeb. The census provided her birth data.

Note for:   Rudolph Mauck,   BEF 1714 - 1750         Index

Alias:   Rudolph /Mauk/

Individual Note:
     Rudolph Mauck and Mildred

The first record of Rudolph in Virginia appears in the records of the Lutheran Minister John Casper Stoever when Stoever baptized Rudolph's daughter Elizabeth at Opequon 02 May 1736. Opequon later became part of Frederick County, VA. Rudolph was born before 1714, and appears in the records of Lancaster County, PA in 1730. Rudolph purchased 400 acres on Mill Run in Augusta County, VA 17 Jan 1749. This area later became Frederick County, then Dunmore County in 1772, was renamed Shenandoah in 1778, and was included in Page County when it was formed in December 1831. It was part of Orange County, prior to the formation of Augusta County

Rudolph died in 1750. His son Rudolph Mauck Jr. eventually moved to Rockingham County, VA before 1782, then to Bourbon County, KY about 1787 and changed the spelling of their surname to Mock. Rudolph Jr. owned land on Mill Run in what later became Page County, VA, adjacent Daniel Mauck. Daniel is believed to have been a son of Rudolph and lived at Hamburg, where he died in 1803. Some of his descendants moved on to Gallia County, OH and others remain in the Shenandoah Valley to this day. Daniel's descendants retained the surname spelling of Mauck, with one exception, whose descendants currently spell their surname as Mouck. Living adjacent Daniel Mauck was Henry Mauck, who is also believed to have been a son of Rudolph Mauck Sr. Henry died intestate in 1787 in what would later become Page County His probate identified 5 daughters but no sons.

The first record of Rudolph appears on 4 Aug 1730 in Conestoque, Lancaster County, PA when Rudy was found guilty of assault and battery and fined one shilling (@@1). Rudolph's last name is spelled Mauck, Mauk, and Mauks in this record.

Rudolph appears in the records of the Lutheran Minister John Casper Stoever when Stoever baptized Rudolph's daughter Elizabeth at Opequon 02 May 1736 (@@2). The last name in this record is spelled Maag. Opequon referred to the area of current day Frederick County, VA that borders Opequon Creek. It is possible Rudolph traveled to this area to have his daughter baptized, versus living there. Rudy and Mildred's births are estimated as being at least 17 years before the baptism of Elizabeth, however, the above court record in Lancaster County, PA would indicate Rudy was probably born before 1714.

On 20 Jan 1744 Rudia Moak appears in the probate inventory of George Everts (@@3). On 21 Apr 1746 Rudolph Maag appears as an appraiser for the estate of Abraham Strickler dec'd, in Augusta County, VA (@@4).

Rudolph purchased 400 acres on Mill Run in Augusta County, VA 17 Jan 1749 (@@5). This area later became Frederick County, then Dunmore County in 1772 and was renamed Shenandoah in 1778. It was part of Orange County, prior to the formation of Augusta County

On 22 Aug 1749 Nicholas Long, son of Philip Long, had 400 acres surveyed. The chain carriers were Jacob Rodecap and Rudy Mock (@@7). This may have been Rudolph Sr., or it could have been Rudolph Jr.

Rudolph appears as an adjacent property owner to Jacob Roadcap who lived adjacent Mill Run, 16 Sep 1749 (@@5). Rudolph Moick appears as an adjacent property owner to Lodowick Selser, son of Mathias Selser, in Augusta County 8 Aug 1750. Rudolph's property is described as being on "Massanuttin Run" (@@5).

On 27 Nov 1750 Paul Lung [Long] was appointed administrator of Rudy Mauck, with Frederick Frailey and Peter Scholl sureties (@@6). This established Rudolph's date of death. Rudolph's inventory was conducted by Mathias Selzer, Daniel Stover and Jacob Burnet 7 Mar 1751 (@@6).

On 30 Mar 1755 Casper Taylor, assignee of Lewis Pence, assignee of Rudy Moick, assignee of Mildred Moick surveyed 200 acres on the South fork of the Shenandoah River by Mill Run adjacent Rudy Moick, Jacob Rodecap, Matthias Selser. The chain carriers were Rudy Moick and Paul Long. This deed states that Mildred was widowed, and had remarried and moved to Carolina (@@7).

Note for:   Daniel Mauck,   1742 - BET 2 AND 10 JAN 1803         Index

Individual Note:
Daniel first appears in 1758 when he was listed as a soldier who served during the French and Indian War in the Old Home Guard (Minute Men) of Frederick Co., VA with Henry Mauk, Richard Mauk, and Reudy Mauk (@@1). Daniel's year of birth was estimated assuming he was over 13 when he served.

Daniel purchased 200 acres on a knoll by Bullock Run in Culpeper Co., VA 19 Aug 1762 (@@2). Daniel sold this land, further described as being in Brumfield Parish in the great fork of the Rappahannock river, 20 Aug 1762 (@@3). Daniel was described as being "of Frederick Co., VA".

Daniel appears when his 283 acres of land on Little Run, a drain of the south fork of the Shenandoah River, in Frederick Co., VA was surveyed 02 Jan 1764 (@@4). One of the chain carriers was a Mathias Mauk. In the Personal Property Tax lists of Culpeper Co. there is a Mathias Mauck from 1782-1790. In 1790 this Mathias was visited the same day as Abraham Mauck, Daniel and Barbara's son. This was the first year Abraham appears in the tax lists, and the last year Mathias appears in them. Mathias moved on to Wilkes Co., GA, where he appears in the tax list of 1793. Mathias was a contemporary of Daniel, and may have been his brother. Chain carriers were typically young, and members of the family as their services were free.

Daniel purchased 283 acres on the South River of the Shenandoah 01 Mar 1765 (@@4). This land was adjacent Martin Coffman, Christian Maggot, Casper Snider, and Jacob Burner. Christian Maggot had purchased his land from Rudolph Mauck, Jr. This is further confirmed in another Northern Neck Land Grant 08 Aug 1750 where Martin Coffman is listed adjacent Rudy Moick (@@4).

There is no direct proof identifying Daniel Mauck as a son of Rudolph Mauck Sr., however the above deed would indicate that he probably was.

Daniel witnessed a survey of 160 acres in this same area for Henry Mauk 30 Jan 1768 (@@4) Henry was likely Daniel's brother.

Daniel's first wife, Barbara Harnsberger, is identified in a Culpeper Co., VA (@@5) deed when she and Daniel sold land on the Robinson Fork in Culpeper Co., VA that Barbara had inherited from her grandfather, John Harnsberger, who's will was dated 15 Jan 1759 and proved 20 May 1760 (@@6). This Will identifies Barbara as the daughter of John's son Stephen Harnsberger. Barbara's year of birth is estimated as being at least 17 years before the birth of her first child. Her marriage to Daniel is estimated as being before the birth of her first child. Barbara's death date and the date of Daniel's 2nd marriage, to Rebecca, are estimated between the years of the birth of Daniel and Barbara's last child Barbara who was born in 1774, and the birth of Daniel and Rebecca's first child David, who was born in 1778.

On 09 Apr 1775 Daniel is listed adjacent James Campbell in the survey of Campbell's 340 acres on the SE side of the South fork of the Shenandoah river (@@4).

Daniel is listed in the rent rolls of Dunmore Co., VA in 1774-1776.

Daniel purchased 200 acres on the south side of Robinson river at the mouth of Quaker Run in Culpeper Co., VA 21 Apr 1783 (@@7).

On 26 May 1785 Daniel and "Paggey" Mauk "of Shenandoah Co., VA" leased 61 acres of his 283 acres that were granted to him 01 Mar 1765, on the drains of the south fork of the Shenandoah river in Shenandoah Co. Daniel leased this 61 acres to Henry Mauk for 5 schillings (@@8). In another deed 26 May 1785 for the same property involving the lease to Henry Mauk, Daniel's wife is listed as "Margaret" and signed "Peggy" (@@9).

On 29 Mar 1786 Daniel purchased 86 acres on the south fork of the Shenandoah river from John and Elizabeth Koontz (@@10). This land was later sold by Daniel's son Joseph and two small lots were set aside for the Mill Creek Baptist Church. Many of the descendant's of Daniel Mauck belonged to this church, which still stands to this day as an historical landmark. Prior to the building of the church, Daniel's home was used by the church as a meeting place (@@26). John Koontz was the minister of this congregation.

Daniel purchased another 2 1/3 acres on the Robinson river on the mouth of Quaker Run, in Culpeper Co., VA 13 Jun 1789 (@@11). Daniel was issued a grant to build a mill on the Robinson river (@@12).

Rebecca first appears with Daniel 20 Apr 1795 in a Madison Co., VA deed where they sold land on the waters of Robinson river (@@13). Madison Co. was formed from Culpeper Co. in 1792. Daniel and Rebecca sold 102 acres of their land in Madison Co. 25 Jun 1795 (@@14). Daniel appears in a release of mortgage in Madison Co., VA 26 Apr 1798 (@@15). In the book Homes of Madison Co., VA Daniel Mauck's land in Madison Co. is described as being in Criglersville on route 672 overlooking the Robinson River.

Daniel was appointed administrator of the personal property of Christian Beaver dec'd 26 Jan 1797 (@@16). Christian was the husband of Daniel's daughter Catharine.

Daniel purchased 47 1/4 acres on the waters of Pass Run 13 Jun 1797 (@@17) and 430 1/2 acres of land on the south fork of the Shenandoah river in Shenandoah Co., VA 25 Oct 1798 (@@18). Daniel and Rebecca sold an additional 102 acres in Madison Co., VA 22 Oct 1799 (@@19).

In Gleanings from Newspapers of Page Co., VA by Judith Campbell, in the Page News and Courier 15 Jul 1938 there is an article describing a contract 17 Mar 1798 to build the first road thru Thornton's Gap, which was the first wagon road thru the Blue Ridge Mountains. Daniel Mauk is listed as a trustee.

Daniel's Will was dated 06 Oct 1802 and proved 10 Jan 1803 (@@20), a codicil below the Will was dated 02 Jan 1803, and identifies his wife Rebecca and children Abraham, David, Joseph, Robert, Daniel, Jacob, Catharine, Elizabeth, Maria, Barbara, and Anna. Daniel indicated he was a farmer from the Mill Run Settlement, Shenandoah Co., VA.

Rebecca's Will was dated 05 Jan 1805 and proved 01 Mar 1805 (@@21) and identifies her sons as Robert, Daniel, and Jacob.

Daniel's property in Shenandoah Co., VA was divided up into 5 plantations 17 Mar 1807 (@@22). This land was sold 10 Oct 1807 and the deed (@@23) identifies Daniel's children and the spouses of the children that were married: Abraham & Mary Mauk, Catherine Beaver, Abraham & Elizabeth Pence, George & Mary Pence, John and Barbara Brubaker, David and Sarah Mauk, Joseph & Elizabeth Mauk, Jonas & Ann Ruffner, Robert Mauk, Jacob Mauk, and Daniel Mauk. Daniel's daughters are again listed by their married names when they released their dower rights for this land. On 12 Oct 1807 a plat was made of the division of Daniel's land (@@24). The land was surveyed 18 Mar 1807 and describes the land as being adjacent Jeremie's Run on the south fork of the Shenandoah river.

The accounts of the sale of the estate of Rebecca was presented to the court by Robert Mauck 20 Jun 1807 (@@25).

Daniel appears in the personal property tax lists of Shenandoah Co., VA yearly from 1782 thru 1802. Rebecca appears in the personal property tax lists of Shenandoah Co., VA in 1803 and 1804. The lists were kept yearly from 1782 thru 1850 (minus 1808).

The location of the Mauck Mill along the Shenandoah River is depicted in a Page Co., VA road book showing a drawing of the proposed road leading to the Mill 26 Jul 1847 (@@27). At the time of this road proposal the land was owned by Joel Mauck, son of Abraham, son of Daniel. The remnants of the Mill are still in place as of 1996 and accessible via the road leading to the old White House from route 211.

[From Bill Mouck: The White House still stands. It was built as a fort for protection from Indians close to Shenandoah River. It's a 2-story fort, living quarters and church combination. White House landing where river crosses road. The White House Cemetery is where Henry is supposed to be buried. ]
