Note for:   Austin Durbin,    -          Index

Individual Note:
Austin, or Augustin, was on the tax list of Barren County, with his brother Thomas, from 1800-1803, and for 1805. It is known that they were taking saltpeter from the Mammoth Cave for gunpowder in those years. Saltpeter was selling for about 17 cents per pound then, but rose to $1.00 per pound during the War of 1812. The United States could have lost the war had it not been for he saltpeter from Mammoth Cave. Austin moved to Hardin County in 1806 and there was married to Sarah Richardson, parentage unknown, May 12, 1807. Soon after 1810, Austin and family left Hardin County and are believed to have migrated to Mississippi or Louisana. According to a book published by the Edmonson County Historical Society in 1986, Austin Durbin and Sarah were members of the Green River Baptist Church which was formed in 1803 at Amos Ferry on Green River in Woodsonville.
