     Date:   1830
Place:   Unknown Townships, , St. Charles, Missouri,

Individual Note:
Dorcas Sophronia Thornhill's heritage is briefly described in the book Pioneer Families of Missouri (on page 212):

"GRAY.--When Robert Gray was a small boy he lost his father, while they were moving from North Carolina to Tennessee. He had four sisters -- Polly, Dorcus, Elizabeth and Jane. After the death of his father, his mother proceeded on her way to Tennessee, with her children; and they remained in that State until 1809, when they came to (now) Warren County, Mo. During the Indian war they lived the greater portion of the time in Castlio's Fort, in St. Charles county. Polly Gray married Rueben Thornhill..."

She is also mentioned in her father's (Reuben Thornhill) will, filed May 5, 1835 in St. Charles County, Missouri, wherein he directs that "...the balance of the lands I now possess to be equally divided among my children...."

Note for:   Thomas H. Kelly,   28 JUL 1796 - 22 JUN 1867         Index

Residence:
     Date:   1860
     Place:   Elkhorn, , Warren, Missouri,

Individual Note:
Thomas H. Kelly, son of Edmund and Mary (Tucker) Kelly, appears in the publication Records of Great Choptank Parish, Cambridge, Maryland (Volume 3), compiled by James A. McAllister, Jr. That publication shows he was baptized on March 4, 1797. His actual birthplace is unknown. However, two of his children report that Thomas was born in:

1) Kentucky (Joseph Patrick Kelly, 1880 Benton County, Arkansas census - page 53)
2) Kentucky (Thomas B. Kelly, 1880 Moundville, Vernon County, Missouri census)
3) Pennsylvania (Thomas B. Kelly, 1900 Moundville, Vernon County, Missouri census)

According to the book Portraits and Biographical Records of St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren County Missouri (pages 556-557) published in the 1890's, Thomas may have emigrated from Tennessee. The article is a biography of Thomas' son, Benjaman, and states in part:

"His (Benjamin) father was Thomas Kelly, who emigrated from Nashville, Tennessee, to this state (Missouri) and died in Warren County, MO."

Thomas probably moved from Maryland to Kentucky, then on to Nashville, Tennessee. Many people who lived in Kentucky followed the Cumberland River south into Tennessee and Nashville as they moved west toward the frontier.

Thomas H. Kelly probably arrived in St. Charles County between 1817 and 1819, but he does not appear to have been accompanied by any brothers or his father. He was the only Kelly found in the 1819 census of St. Charles County, Missouri.

He first married Nancy Zumwalt, daughter of Andrew and Margaret (Balderage) Zumwalt, on December 7, 1821, in St. Charles County, Missouri. Their marriage ceremony was conducted by Justice of the Peace T. D. Stephenson.

Thomas was in Dardenne township, St. Charles County, Missouri when on December 16, 1828, he took up a bright sorrel mare, about four years old. The appraised value, by Lazurus McFall & Louis
Strong, was $35.

He is shown on the 1830 Federal Census in St. Charles County, Missouri (Page 269, Line 27). He appears to have had one more daughter than he did in the 1840 census (born 1820-1825), but Nancy (Zumwalt) Kelly (his wife) does not appear to be enumerated in the household. There are a couple of possible explanations for this; Nancy might have been staying with her parents or one of her siblings, when the 1830 census was taken.

Thomas H. Kelly appears on the 1840 Warrenton, Warren County, Missouri census. The census does not identify where he was born.

Following the death of Nancy (Zumwalt) Kelly, Thomas married Lucinda Hutcherson on November 17, 1846 in Warren County, Missouri. Their marriage is recorded in The Marriage Records of Warren County, Missouri, Books A and B, 1833-1860 (Kansas City, Missouri: privately printed, 1969).

Thomas H. and Lucinda (Hutcherson) Kelly both appear on the 1850 census abstract by Ellsberry, Warren County Missouri (#239) listing children; Benjamin 17, Rachel 13, Egbert 11, Nancy 7, Harriet 2. There is also an Elizabeth Hutcherson 12, living with them at that time. Elizabeth Hutcherson may have been Lucinda's child from a previous marriage. This census shows Thomas was born in Maryland.

They also appear on the 1860 census abstract in Warren County, Missouri, listing children Rachel 21, Egbert H. 19, and Nancy 17.

Thomas H. Kelly received four land patents from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in St. Charles County, Missouri:

1) On October 1, 1831 (Certificate Number 23050) consisting of 58 acres
2) September 9, 1835 (Certificate Number 3238) consisting of 31 acres
3) October 1, 1840 (Certificate Number 7832) consisting of 40 acres
4) November 1, 1851 (Certificate Number 18279) consisting of 40 acres

Although Thomas H. Kelly died without a will, his estate is listed on several pages of volume "E" probate records of Warren County, Missouri, from 1867 to 1877. Two entries are worthy of note:

1) At the October term of probate court in 1867, Phelix Carrico, administrator of the estate, was allowed $50 for support of widow and family by selling some tobacco at a private sale. This is the first time Thomas H. Kelly's death is noted.
2) In 1869, Phelix Carrico was to divide a total of $450 between Joseph P. Kelly, John D. Kelly, Benjamin Kelly, Margaret Howell, (no first name given) Thornhill, (no first name given) Wilson, Thomas Kelly, Egbert Kelly, and Harriet Kelly. Each received $50.

There are several sales of land recorded in early Missouri history where apparently the children of Thomas Kelly, one-by-one, sold off the estate their father had left them.

Thomas is probably buried in Warren County, Missouri.

Thomas H. Kelly was born around 1796, actual birthdate and birthplace are unknown. His middle name may have been Stephenson. He was first married to Nancy Zumwalt. In his book, The Andrew Zumwalt Family, Paul L. Reed states:

"...Nancy, who married Thomas H. Kelly probably was the daughter of Andrew and Margaret (Balderage) Zumwalt...no birth or death date known."

Nancy Zumwalt appears on the 1840 Warren County, Missouri census with Thomas H. Kelly, giving her age as between thirty and forty, having her born about 1800 or 1810. She probably died in that same county around 1840 or 1846. Zumwalt is a very early surname in Missouri, there long before it became a state. Although there have been several books written on that family, like many pioneer families there were many children and each of the children seemed to repeat the given names. Therefore, there are many Nancy Zumwalts in early Missouri history.

Following the death of Nancy (Zumwalt) Kelly, Thomas married Lucinda Hutcherson, who was born around 1810 or 1815. They both appear on the 1850 census abstract by Ellsberry, Warren County Missouri (#239) listing children; Benjamin 17, Rachel 13, Egbert 11, Nancy 7, Harriet 2. There is also an Elizabeth Hutcherson 12, living with them at that time. Elizabeth Huterchson may have been Lucinda's child from a previous marriage. They also appear on the 1860 census abstract in Warren County, Missouri, listing children Rachel 21, Egbert H. 19, and Nancy 17.

Although Thomas Stephenson Kelly died without a will, his estate is listed on several pages of volume "E" probate records of Warren County, Missouri, from 1867 to 1877. Two entries are worthy of note:

1) At the October term of probate court in 1867, Phelix Carrico, administrator of the estate, was allowed $50 for support of widow and family by selling some tobacco at a private sale. This is the first time Thomas Stephenson Kelly's death is noted.

Individual Note:
From Heritage of the Hills, p. 233-34: "Wash and Susannah Muskrat Woodall lived on a farm in the Olympus community for many years adjoining a farm owned by Mrs. Woodall's brother Jim Muskrat. The Woodall's donated the land for the Olympus school. When land was allotted he traded for a farm on Honey Creek that he filed in his daughter Annie's name. She and her husband Jim Oakes lived there and farmed for several years before he moved into Grove and opened a barber shop which he ran until he retired.

Wash and Susannah Woodall moved into Grove to a home on the corner of Sixth and Hazel where they lived the rest of their lives. . . . Wash Woodall died in 1921 at sixty-seven years of age. Susannah Woodall died in 1948 at ninety-three years of age."

p. 396-7: "This happened at a Christmas eve party in 1903. Susan and Wash Woodall were giving a play party for the teenagers. They played such games as the "Needles Eye," "Marching down to Quebec Town," and "Bluebird in my Cup." The party broke up about midnight and all were in the yard leaving when a huge fire sprang up at the Bates barn about a mile east, now known as the Dorothy Goodman farm. Four good horses were burned to death. We all watched the fire, when another fire sprang up one half mile west of the Bates farm. This fire was on the old Zeke Fields place . . . At this time of the year all grain was stored in barns -- a total loss, no insurance, no fire trucks. The feed was scarce and high."
